Wasaga Beach
Last week it was extremely hot, so we decided to go to the beach Thursday. My dad was on holidays, my brother took the day off, so along with Mom and Peter, we all headed up to Wasaga Beach early in the morning. It was about a 2.5 hour drive. When we got there, there were quite a few people at the beach already, but we still managed to find a decent parking spot.
I suspected that Mom had over packed the van, but I didn't realize just how much, until we had to carry the stuff down to the beach. I swear, she must have packed up half the fridge. Peter, being an experienced beach-goer, had suggested that we bring a patio umbrella. Thank God we did! The sun was scorching. The sand was so hot we could barely walk on it. As soon as we had our things set up, we all headed for the water. It was perfect. Not too cold, not too warm. Of course, being pregnant, I was only able to go in the water up to my knees. Still, it was refreshing. After our first dip, we had a little breakfast. Mom had brought so much food, it was like dining at a small restaurant.
We had the choice between a number of meals, 5 to 6 different vegetables, a whack of fruits, yogurts, chips and other snacks. It was insane. We tried to eat as much of it as we could so we'd have less to take home. After suggesting the use of sunblock over and over, my brother finally put a little dab on his face and shoulders. I told him to use more or he'd be hurting later, but what do I know, I'm just a big sister. Later the day, Dad, Peter and myself stopped in at the Banana Club for a drink. I was not impressed with the place. It was too expensive, the music was too loud, and our waitress didn't know if she was coming or going. We had a couple of drinks, then went back to the beach. We watched a little boy (about 1-year-old) go for a swim with his dad in his inflatable toy car, he was adorable. We wondered if our baby would be old enough to bring to the beach by that time next year. She will be about 10 months old.
With the help of swim-diapers, we might be able to do it. I spent the rest of the day relaxing under the huge umbrella, watching the rest of my group enjoy the water. At about 5 we packed up and left. On the way home, my brother started complaining about sunburn. By the next morning he looked like a lobster, with blisters on his face from the burn. He was so sore, he walked with his arms and legs kept away from his body. He never made it to work, he ended up calling in sick that day. For a second, I though, well, next time he'll listen. Then I realized, nah, he probably won't, he'll just burn again. Other than that incident, we had a great time at the beach.
